EMERALD FIESTA-INTER COLLEGIATE ZOOFEST 2023

The Emerald Fiesta – Intercollegiate Zoofest 2023, organized by the Post Graduate Department of Zoology, took place on January 20th. The event featured morning and afternoon sessions with a variety of engaging competitions like Melange, Mistico, Merito, Moroso, Disegno, Oscura, and Minato. CMS College, Kottayam, secured the first prize, with Baselius College coming in second. Dr. Shyla Abraham, Principal, Dr. Anilakumary K. S., HOD, and alumni member Mr. Ashish were present for prize distribution. The event concluded at 4:15 pm, leaving participants inspired and eager for future zoological adventures.


WORKSHOP ON SPECIES DIVERSIFICATION IN AQUACULTURE

The Postgraduate Department of Zoology organized a one-day workshop on ‘Species diversification in Aquaculture’ in collaboration with the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). The workshop featured informative technical sessions led by industry experts, providing valuable insights into aquaculture practices. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions, gaining knowledge and exchanging ideas. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, fostering a collaborative atmosphere conducive to learning. With 45 participants in attendance, the workshop served as a platform for sharing expertise and promoting advancements in aquaculture techniques


NATIONAL SEMINAR ON EMERGING TRENDS AND RECENT ADVANCES IN BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

The Postgraduate Department of Zoology, in collaboration with the Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences, Kottayam, hosted a one-day National seminar on ‘Emerging trends and recent advances in Biological research’. With 91 participants in attendance, the seminar provided a platform for experts to discuss transformative topics such as waste management, aquaculture, and marine biotechnology. The event concluded with a valedictory function, marking a successful day of knowledge exchange and exploration in the field of biological research.

WEBINAR- REMEMBERING THE FATHER OF INDIAN GREEN REVOLUTION- DR. M. S. SWAMINATHAN

The Department of Zoology organized a webinar on October 21st, 2023, to commemorate the contributions of Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, known as the “Father of the Green Revolution in India,” following his passing on September 28th, 2023. Attended by 44 participants, including students and faculty, the webinar featured a talk by Ms. Gopika Biju, Senior Research Fellow, highlighting Dr. Swaminathan’s significant impact on India’s agriculture. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Jeena Antony of M1 Zoology.


INVITED TALK: HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THROUGH AYURVEDA

The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with the Women’s Forum, IQAC, and the Gender Champions’ Club, organized an awareness session on Healthy lifestyle through Ayurveda to honor National Ayurveda Day. This day, an integral part of the Indian Knowledge System Program, celebrates the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. Dr. Vishnu Mohan C., an Ayurvedic physician led the awareness class, emphasizing the importance of mental and self-awareness for optimal physical health. Participants were encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyle habits and engage in physical activity. The Department of Zoology proudly contributed to the Indian Knowledge System Program by organizing this program in observance of National Ayurveda Day.


CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

The Postgraduate Department of Zoology organized a capacity development and enrichment program for its students on December 21st, 2023, at BMM Hall. Ms. Mahima Ann Abraham, Head of the Department of Zoology, delivered the welcome address. The program featured a technical session led by Mr. Justin P. James, a research scholar and motivational speaker, focusing on achieving professional success and effective communication skills. Mr. James emphasized continuous self-improvement and confidence building. Ms. Jeena Antony of M1 Zoology delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the program.


SCIENCE EXHIBITION

Jerusalem Mount Higher Secondary School in Vakathanam, Kottayam, celebrated its Silver and Diamond Jubilee of the Higher Secondary section with a grand exhibition titled ‘Saga 2024 – A Plethora of Science, Arts, and Technology’ on January 4th and 5th, 2024. The event showcased a diverse range of exhibits contributed by various entities, including Kerala Govt. Armed Forces, Engineering Colleges, Arts & Science Colleges, Print Media, Local Artists, and School Students. Notably, the Postgraduate Department of Kuriakose Gregorios College, along with other science departments, actively participated in the exhibition. The Department presented museum specimens, charts, and both still and working models, demonstrating their commitment to education and innovation. Through collaborative efforts between students and faculty, the exhibition proved to be a resounding success, embodying the spirit of celebration and intellectual exploration.


NATIONAL CLEANLINESS DAY – WEBINAR ON THE MODERN ECO- FRIENDLY WOMAN

A webinar titled “The Modern Ecofriendly Woman” was organized on January 30, 2024, on the Google platform. Mrs. Mahima Ann Abraham, Head of the Zoology Department at K G College Pampady, welcomed participants and introduced Dr. Elizabeth V. Mathew from UC College Aluva as the resource person. Dr. Mathew discussed the ecological footprint of women and introduced alternatives to disposable pads, emphasizing the importance of environmentally friendly options like menstrual cups. She provided guidance on their use and encouraged participants to adopt eco-friendly practices. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by NSS Volunteer Haritha.


WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2024 – WORKSHOP ON THE THEME:  WETLANDS AND HUMAN WELL BEING

As part of the World Wetlands Day Celebration 2024, an action-driven Workshop on Wetlands and Human Well-being was held on February 2nd, 2024, in association with WWF-India. Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director of WWF-India, delivered the Lead Talk, highlighting the misuse and destruction of wetlands through case studies from Kerala. A session on Wetlands as Waterbird Habitats emphasized the interconnectedness of wetlands and bird populations, stressing their importance. Anushreedha Sivanandan of WWF-India conducted a session on Wetland Biomonitoring, focusing on odonates and wetlands. Following lunch, participants engaged in the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Journey, committing to reducing plastic usage. A Wetlands Documentary by Shri. Suresh Elamon was screened, and a brainstorming/group activity session led to the development of an action plan for local wetland protection, fostering a proactive approach towards wetland conservation.


INTERCOLLEGIATE ZOOFEST- EMERALD FIESTA 2024

The 11th Intercollegiate ZooFest, Emerald Fiesta, organized by the Postgraduate Department of Zoology at K.G. College Pampady on February 19th, 2024, offered a variety of competitions and activities for Zoology students from other colleges. The event, held at RUSA hall, commenced with an inaugural ceremony attended by students, faculty, and guests. Competitions such as Spell Bee, Simple Identification, Galapagos Treasure Hunt, Spot Drawing, Spot Photography, Quiz, Crossword Puzzle were conducted throughout the day. CMS College Kottayam emerged as the overall winner, with Baselius College Kottayam securing the first runner-up position. The competitions were followed by cultural programs and the distribution of certificates and cash prizes to the winners, fostering a spirit of collaboration and competition among participants.

CAMPUS BIRD COUNT

The Department of Zoology organized a campus bird count on February 17th, 2024, to raise awareness about birds and understand their populations and movements. Postgraduate and undergraduate students participated in the event, which included a welcome note from Ms. Mahima Ann Abraham, Head of the Department, and an informative talk by Mr. Sree Vijay, a Bird watcher and Wildlife Photographer. Several bird species were spotted during the field observation. The event provided valuable insights and was an engaging educational experience for the participants, enhancing their understanding of avian ecology and conservation.
