The Department of Physics commenced functioning as an independent department in 1999. It offers an undergraduate programme in Physics (Model I). The infrastructure, Physics lab, Electronics Lab, Computer Lab, and Department library facilities are enough to meet the requirements of the UG students. In addition to the conventional chalk and talk method of teaching the academic landscape is enriched with peer teaching including discussions and seminars, a tutorial system, and remedial teaching where the ICT facilities are used. We believe in the holistic development of our students for which the mentoring system plays a pivotal role. Every fresher is allotted a mentor who will take care of the mentees for the next three years. The mentor is the supporting pillar for the mentees inside the campus and a guiding light wherever they go. The department includes various skill development sessions, career orientation sessions, and capacity building sessions in its plan.
The performance of our students in the University examinations is a matter of pride to the department. Our students have secured excellent results in University examinations till this year including 100% pass during several years with top positions in university examinations in previous years. Amidst this ultra brain drain period, we are also facing a drop down in the intake of students. But the admitted students are well taken care off and allowed to excel in their interested areas. In 2022, our student Ms. Rajalakshmi R. bagged ninth rank in B Sc. Physics (Model 1) examinations with 9.72 CCPA with S grade. Lakshmi N. Govind who completed BSc Physics in 2023 cleared JAM 2024 with an all India rank of 33 and JEST 2024 with an all India rank of 78.
The Department gives great importance to academic as well as co-curricular activities. Our students actively participate in NSS, NCC, Arts Fest and Sports Meet from which they bagged a handful of prizes and mindful of experiences and happiness. A strong alumni is a matter of prestige for the Department, as they shine in various professions within the country and abroad.
To develop conceptual clarity of Physics among students without diluting the mathematical rigor. In our relentless efforts for excellence, we are guided by the Michelangelo dictum: “I saw an angel in the marble and carved until I set him free
